Since most of us don't have to spell sleep apnea until we think we have it or are diagnosed and decide to do some research, it's one of those phrases that gets a lot of spelling variations. It also happens to be one of those words that is spelled (or spelt) differently in the Queen's english. In the US it is spelled "sleep apnea" while in the Commonwealth it's "sleep apnoea". But that doesn't stop creative individuals from coming up with their own variations... "Sleep apnia", although incorrect sounds like a reasonable guess. Other common approximations of spelling are "sleep apneia", "sleep aponea" "sleep apenia" and "sleep apena". So, why am I making such a big deal out of misspelling "sleep apneia", er... I mean "sleep apnea"? Because people who can't spell get sleep apena too! If you've found this page through a search engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing then my plan has worked like a charm! Okay, let's get serious... sleep apena, no matter how you spell it, is no laughing matter. It can become a very serious, even life threatening condition if it is not diagnosed and treated properly.
